Indian Ringneck Parakeets

Psittacula krameri

Ringnecks can be great pets. They are known for the following qualities:
  • about 16 inches from the head to tail
  • weigh between 110 to 140 gms.
  • males get a ring around their neck at 2 to 3 years of age
  • their chest feathers are like cut velvet
  • have a fun loving attitude - always into something
  • can amuse themselves if given lots of toys
  • need to be handled regularly or they lose their tameness
  • a good family pet because they tend to share themselves willing with everyone who interacts with it.
  • love a bath (ie. splash in a dish of water, or play under a light spray in the kitchen sink)
  • are good eaters and are usually not picky
  • use pellets as their main food
  • important also provide fruits and veggies, whole grain breads, pasta and rice
  • seeds make good rewards when training because they eat quickly
  • important training to practice "step up" on a regular basis
  • "step up" will probably be its first words
  • have the capability to speak clearly and may develop a large vocabulary
